The Cornerstone, Part I. Above and Below the Jewish Talmud

The Stone which the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone.
By the LORD this has been done and it is wonderful in our eyes.

– Psalms 118:22-23

Part I. Above and Below the Jewish Talmud

The Jewish Talmud also contains metaphorical allusions to the two triangles which create the Star of David. Here are just a few passages related to this phenomenon:

Talmud
Sanhedrin 103b

Once a man becomes poor in friends
below on earth…

…he becomes poor above in Heaven.

Talmud
Gittin 10b

The Jew signed first
below.…

..thinking that another Jew would sign above, but the lender got the signature of a Samaritan instead.
Talmud
Sanhedrin 44b

Resh Lakish said: ‘He who devotes his strength to prayer
below

…has no enemies to overcome above.’ R. Johanan said: ‘One should ever implore mercy that all Heavenly beings may support his effort in prayer so that he may have no enemies on high.’

Talmud
Yebamoth 105b

A man who offers up his prayers must direct his eyes towards the Temple
below, for it is said, ‘And Mine eyes and Mine heart shall be there perpetually’…

…And the other said: ‘The eyes of him who offers up prayers shall be directed towards the
Heavens above, for it is said ‘Let us lift up our heart with our hand.’
Talmud
Yebamoth 105b

A man who offers up his prayers must direct his eyes to the Temple below

…and his heart towards the Heavens above

Talmud
Baba Bathra 11a

It is related of King Monobaz that he spent all his own savings and the savings of his fathers in years of scarcity. His brothers and his father’s household…said to him, ‘Your father saved money and added to the treasures of his fathers, and you are squandering them.’ He replied: “My fathers stored up below

…and I am storing above , as it says, ‘Truth springeth out of the earth and righteousness looketh down from Heaven.’ My fathers stored in a place which can be tampered with, but I have stored in a place which cannot be tampered with.

Talmud
Talmud, Tanchum. Voeschanan

Death is designed for man from time immemorial. When the hour of man’s departure hence arrives, nothing will save him from it. If he had the wings of an eagle and could soar high up above the earth…

…he would, of his own accord,
come down to meet his fate.–Death is a new gate for the righteous to enter in.
Talmud
Berakoth 17a

One should always strive to be on the best terms with his brethren and his relatives and with all men and even with the heathen in the street, in order that he may be beloved above

…and well-liked below and be acceptable to his fellow creatures.’

Talmud
Berakoth 29b

R. Eliezer says: ‘Do Thy will in heaven above

…and grant relief to them that fear Thee below and do that which is good in Thine eyes. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, who hearest prayer.’
Talmud
Sotah 36a

Behold it is written: ‘And I will send the hornet before thee!’ R. Simeon b. Lakish said: ‘It stood by the bank of the Jordan and injected a virus [into the Canaanites] which blinded their
eyes above...

…and castrated them below.’
Talmud
Baba Mezi’a 86b

One should never break away from custom. For behold, Moses
ascended on High

…and ate no bread, whereas the Ministering Angels
descended below and ate bread.

The Cornerstone in the Bible

The Bible’s Cornerstone

What follows are selected Biblical passages which mention the Cornerstone by name. Here they are:

Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set or who laid its Cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

– Job 38:5-7

The stone that the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone.

– Psalm 118:22

– Matthew 21:4

Have you not read this Scripture: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone?’

Mark 12:10

(Jesus) looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone’?

You boast, ‘We have entered into a covenant with death, with the grave we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie, our refuge and falsehood, our hiding place.’ So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious Cornerstone for a sure foundation. The one who trusts will never be dismayed.’

– Isaiah 28:15-16

The Two Hands of God, Part I. The Dangers of the Right Hand Path

The Right Hand

Part I. The Dangers of the Right Hand Path

Most everyone desires to be righteous, to be good, shunning evil in order to carefully avoid being the sinister one, the bad guy. Even so, the eternal Right Hand of God and His inherent goodness does not necessarily mean that the Right Hand of mankind, indeed of any man, is in anyway equal or similar to that which mere mortals have yet to fully understand. This is clearly indicated in Scriptures even though there are numerous passages which also allude the mighty power and saving grace of the LORD God’s Right Hand.

Indeed, the question that all believers should be asking themselves is who stands at the Right Hand of man. Many would be quick to assume that it is the LORD who remains at the Right Hand of all God-fearing Jews and Christian. The Bible itself states this quite bluntly in the following manner:

The LORD is at Your right hand. He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath. (Psalm 110:5)

For He stands at the right hand of the needy to save him from those who judge his soul. (Psalm 109:31)

The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade on your right hand. (Psalm 121:5)

This ancient Hebrew teaching permeates both Jewish and Christian belief systems, where those of faith have the confidence that the invisible, yet sanctifying, presence of God always stands beside them at their own right hand, protecting them from the Devil. Certain other passages in the Bible tell a different story however. Two extremely relevant verses in Scriptures reads as follows:

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. (Zechariah 3:1)

Appoint a wicked man over him and let an accuser stand at his right hand. (Psalm 109:6)

With that in mind, even the most devout and sinless believer should start realizing that placing too much trust in the Right hand, or the Right Hand path of blind faith, may be a little more dangerous than they might have thought previously.

And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead (Revelation 13:16)

This is not to say that evil is good, or excusable, or even understandable, it is more a matter of steering those who follow the Judeo-Christian tradition in the correct direction. Rabbi Joshua ben Joseph (Jesus Christ) made this a central part of His teaching in that He was constantly reminded His disciples and followers that, in the end, only God can be the Judge of one’s fellow man (or woman). As the Gospels state:

If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. (Matthew 5:30)

Indeed, as other parts of the Bible describe it, especially the Old Testament, the only truly ‘correct’ direction that believers should trust in is neither to the Left Hand or to the Right, but straight forward and dead ahead. Here are two fairly common sense instructions from the LORD God Himself:

Decline not to the right hand, nor to the left: turn away thy foot from evil. For the LORD knoweth the ways that are on the right hand: but those are perverse which are on the left hand. But he will make thy courses straight, he will bring forward thy ways in peace. (Proverbs 4:27)

According to His law; and thou shalt follow their sentence: neither shalt thou decline to the right hand nor to the left hand. (Deuteronomy 17:11)

It wasn’t so long ago that those who were Left-Handed were considered by many superstitious people to be evil in some mysterious way. Indeed, the word sinister comes directly from the Latin word for the Left Hand. Readers should never forget, however, that throughout the past few thousand years of history, it has been the Right Hand, and almost never the Left Hand, that has been responsible for nearly all the rapes, murders, and other evil acts of cruelty and injustice that have occurred  far too many times since Cain first killed Abel with his own Right Hand.

May the LORD God bless you in the name of the Judeo-Christian tradition.

And the Lord summoned me, and said to me: ‘Enoch, sit down on my left with Gabriel.’ And I bowed down to the Lord, and the Lord spoke.  (II Enoch 24:1-2)
